Port Huron Icehawks Weekly Roundup: Week 12

Josh Avedisian
1-5

The Icehawks enjoyed another fine week as they posted a record of 2-0-1 yet after getting those 5 out of 6 points the Icehawks have now fallen out of first place because the Kalamazoo K-Wings continued there hot streak and are now 1 points ahead of Port Huron for first place. A great week however ended with what could re-create an intense rivalry. After a 7-3 win over the Flint Generals, Flint's goalie Chad Alban wanted to fight Larry Sterling. Players and Referees quickly intervened the possible fight but as Alban was leaving the ice a security guard grabbed Alban from behind prompting Alban to turn around and tackle him. Nobody was seriously hurt and no arrests were made after the mayhem but it does make for an interesting game on Saturday when the Icehawks travel to Flint.

The Icehawks would start the week out on the final night of 2008. They would travel to Bloomington where they haven't lost yet this season and that continued Wednesday as they beat the PrairieThunder 3-1. The Icehawks got their 3 goals early in the first period and coasted to victory after only taking 5 shots on goal in the 2nd and 3rd periods combined. Kris Vernarsky had a goal and an assist in the game and Larry Sterling got the win in net.

The Icehawks would get a day off Thursday before welcoming the Fort Wayne Komets to McMorran Arena on Friday. It was a low scoring affair with both teams having trouble setting up any sort of offensive chances. After both teams could only score 1 goal through regulation the game headed to Overtime where with about 30 seconds left Guy Dupuis got one past Sterling to give the Komets the 2 points and the victory. Jeff Zehr had the only goal for the Icehawks.

The Icehawks stayed home Saturday as Flint came to town. The Generals came in on a 3 game losing streak and the Icehawks made sure it got to 4 as they defeated the Generals 7-3. Of course the biggest story of the game was actually after the game but the Icehawks took it to the Generals scoring 3 goals in the 1st and 3rd periods that keyed the Icehawks to the victory. Jamie Carroll had 2 goals for the Icehawks and Larry Sterling got the win between the pipes.
