Port Huron Icehawks Weekly Roundup: Week 11

12-29
Josh Avedisian

The Icehawks enjoyed a very successful Week 11. Coming back from the quick holiday break the Icehawks posted a 2-0 record against two teams that are both contending for first place in the IHL. The Icehawks now sit alone in first place in the IHL 2 points ahead of 2nd place Kalamazoo. Maybe more importantly however the Icehawks now have the 2nd highest winning percentage in the league at .600%. The Icehawks have played 3 more games than the 2nd and 3rd place teams so winning percentage is an important stat to look out for in the future.

The Icehawks returned from the Holiday break to welcome the same team that beat them before the break, the Muskegon LumberJacks. This time however it would be the Icehawks who got the win in an exciting 6-5 victory. Tab Lardner scored a pair of goals in the first period and Jamie Lovell scored in the overtime on the power play to give the Icehawks the victory. Larry Sterling escaped with the win between the pipes.

The Icehawks then would welcome the Fort Wayne Komets to McMorran Arena where the Komets are having much success this season. Coming into the game the Komets are 3-0 at McMorran Arena. But after a lackluster start where they were quickly down 2-0 in the first period the Icehawks went on to score 4 unanswered goals to defeat the Komets 4-2. Jeff Zehr led the way with 2 of the goals. More importantly however was the fight Zehr got into late in the 1st period with Jay Holladay that seemed to put the momentum in the Icehawks favor. The game was rough the rest of the way. 31 penalties were called altogether, 12 of which were fighting majors. Larry Sterling picked up the victory, settling down after the first period Sterling came back to life in the 2nd and 3rd periods stopping all 22 shots he faced.

WEEKLY HAWKBITS

The Icehawks were 2 for 9 on the power play this week which now has them ranked 2nd in the IHL with a 20.41 percentage. They are also ranked 3rd in penalty kill with a 84.14%

Derek Merlini has a Plus/Minus rating of +15 which is good for 3rd in the IHL. Daniel Tetrault has a +13 which lands him in 6th place. Jamie Carroll has taken the most shots in the league with 129 shots on goal.

Jeremy Tucker was once again out all week with the upper body injury. Robert Snowball has also been sidelined and will be out for maybe another week.

The Icehawks made no transactions this week.

The Icehawks came back from the holidays not in the holiday spirit. All together the Icehawks were involved in 8 fights in the week.

Jeff Zehr was once again picked as our Community News Player of the Week. Zehr was huge in the win against Fort Wayne on Saturday and posted 3 goals in the week.
