Icehawks win thriller 6-5 The Icehawks gave their fans a late Christmas present last night with a thrilling overtime victory over the Muskegon LumberJacks 6-5. Tab Lardner added 2 goals and Jamie Lovell scored the overtime goal to lead the Hawks to the win.
The Icehawks would have a 3-1 lead after the first period. Jason Selleke (5) (Rob Cowan, Ian Turner) led off scoring at 7:08 to put the Hawks ahead 1-0. Muskegon would tie it up however when Maxime Lincourt picked up a rebound in the crease and drove it home.
Lardner would take over the period from there. At 15:28 Lardner (13) (Derek Patrosso) took a shot from the point that beat Clayton Pool and gave the Icehawks the 1 goal lead. Then at 19:06 Lardner (14) (Patrosso) scored again to give the Hawks the 2 goal lead heading into the locker room.
The 2nd period was no to kind to the Icehawks. Muskegon started scoring in the period only 43 seconds in when Luke Stauffacher scored off of Larry Sterling's shoulder that found its way in to cut the Hawks lead to just 1 goal.
Jeff Zehr (11) (Kerry Bowman) would restore that 2 goal lead when he took a slapshot from right in front that beat pool that put the score at 4-2.
Midway through the 2nd period the Lumberjacks would take over. First at 10:38 Chad Costello cut the lead to 1 goal then at 15:55 Luke Stauffacher would score his 2nd goal of the period to tie the game up 4-4 to end the 2nd period.
The 3rd period is when things got exciting. Muskegon would take their first lead of the game 7:00 minutes into the period when Chad Woollard scored on a 5 on 3 power play. It seemed the Icehawks have seen this all to much. They came into the game a game under .500 at McMorran Arena.
But Jason Chafe (9) (Derek Merlini, Selleke) would tie the game up at 10:49 and drive the game into overtime where each team would pick up a point in the IHL standings.
The Icehawks were 0 for 3 on the power play through the first 3 periods but it was the last one that counted. Costello would take a holding penalty for the Jacks and Jamie Lovell (7) (Lardner, Jamie Carroll) capitalized on it and got the Icehawks 2 points and a victory in front of an announced crowd of 1,311 fans.
