Icehawks score 6 to top Flint The Icehawks got the offensive game going tonight in Flint and continued their success on the road as they beat the Flint Generals 6-3 in front of an announced crowd of 2,049 fans at Perani Arena. The Hawks were also able to keep a hold of first place in the IHL standings and stayed 2 points ahead of Kalamazoo who also won their game last night.
The Icehawks were able to strike first in the contest when at 16:08 into the first period, Kris Vernarsky (7) (Tab Lardner, Derek Patrosso) scored on the power play to give the Icehawks a 1-0 lead.
Flint was able to respond though just over a minute later when off a face off in the Icehawks zone Josef Fojtik took a quick shot that beat Larry Sterling that tied the game up going into intermission.
In the Second Period the Icehawks were able to take control of the game. Only 2 minutes into the period, Nick Lindberg (11) (Jeff Zehr, Ian Turner) gave the Icehawks a 2-1 lead with a power play goal that beat Chad Alban high and off the post. That was Lindberg's 2nd goal in as many nights.
Late in the 2nd period, the Icehawks were able to add another when Jason Chafe (6) (Kerry Bowman, Jason Selleke) scored to put the Icehawks ahead by 2 going into the 3rd period. The Icehawks seemed to have the momentum on their side and they would need it going into what would be a high scoring 3rd period.
Quickly into the 3rd period the Icehawks were able to score another. Jamie Lovell (6) (Bowman) took one right off the faceoff and got it past Alban to give the Hawks a 3 goal lead to start the 3rd.
The Generals would look to mount a comeback though when Steve Rymsha scored to get the Generals within 2 with still over 15 minutes to go in the period.
However, at 12:45 Jeff Zehr (9) (Lindberg, Turner) was standing on the doorstep and beat Alban to give the Icehawks their 3 goal lead back. Zehr, Turner and Lindberg all collected their 2nd point on the night with the goal.
The 2 teams would exchange goals once more before the final buzzer. First for the Generals, Justin Depretis at 16:25 on the power play got the Generals back within 2. But Jason Chafe (7) was able to get his 2nd of the night when Alban was caught out of net trying to get the extra attacker on the ice and gave Chafe the easy open netter to make it the final 6-3.
