Hawks dropped by Komets 3-2 The Komets are showing they like to play at McMorran Arena. So far this year the Komets have played 3 games at McMorran and have a 3-0 record. They did it again tonight dropping the Icehawks 3-2 in front of 991 fans.
The Komets are ahead of the Icehawks 1-3 in the season series. The Icehawks only win came in Fort Wayne where they are also undefeated this year with a 1-0 record.
But tonight the Komets would rule the barn again when they started scoring first. Jay Holladay would beat Larry Sterling glove side to give the Komets the early 1-0 lead. Holladay got assists from P.C Drouin and Leo Thomas.
The Icehawks would strike back over 3 minutes later when Kerry Bowman scored his 2nd goal of the season to tie the game up 1-1. The goal came unassisted.
Similar to the Komets first goal, P.C Drouin took a slap shot through a crowd of skaters that got past Sterling glove side again to give the Komets the 2-1 lead. Sean Oconnor and Brad Macmillan would nab assists on the play.
However, the Hawks were able to tie it up late in the first period when Kris Vernarsky (5) got one past Nick Boucher to put the game at 2-2 going into intermission. Jamie Lovell and Tab Lardner got the assists on the play. The Hawks outshot the Komets 13 to 7 in the 1st period.
Missed opportunities seemed to be the theme for the 2nd period for the Icehawks. Overall the Icehawks had 4 straight power plays, including one that was 4 minutes long and one that carried over from the first period. But the Icehawks could not find a way to get one past Boucher.
The Komets were however able to get one past Sterling. Sterling came out behind the net to play the puck to Ian Turner but a bad bounce off the boards and the puck was picked up by Brandon Warner who passed it to Sean OConnor that gave the Komets the final 3-2 victory. The Icehawks outshot the Komets 11-10 in that period.
The Komets defense was able to clamp down on the Icehawks offense as they were able to pull out the victory by outshooting the Icehawks 13 to 6.
