Hawks fend off Bloomington 3-2 The Icehawks needed to win to keep pace with Kalamazoo in 2nd place and they were able to do so, fending off Bloomington 3-2 in front of 2,432 fans.
The Icehawks got to work right away when Jeff Zehr (7) scored when he picked up a rebound from a Daniel Tetrault slap shot off the face off to put the Hawks up quickly 1-0. Zehr now has a 2 games in a row in which he has scored a goal. The Icehawks would add another when Derek Merlini (3), who is now getting more time at forward on the power play was able to stand strong in front of the net and bank one home to put the Icehawks up 2-0 in the first period. The shots in the period were 11 to 9 in favor of Bloomington.
In a defensive 2nd period, the Prairie Thunder were able to get themselves back into the game when Brent Clarke scored on the power play, bringing his team within one goal. The Icehawks actually out shot the Thunder 11 to 9 in the period.
The 3rd period got interesting. First after a big hit on Jamie Carroll from Voldy Dashko, Jeff Zehr stepped in and pounded on Dashko, each player would receive 5 minute major for the fights.
The Icehawks then were able to put some distance between them and the Thunder when Jason Chafe (5) put them up 3-1. But the Thunder wouldn't go away quite yet. During a Jeremy Tucker penalty the Thunder got another Power Play goal. This time from Brett Holmberg that got the Thunder back within 1 goal.
Bloomington shot themselves in the foot though when Jon Booras took a penalty late in the 3rd period and had to kill it off which would not leave them with enough time to complete there come back as the Icehawks were able to fend them off 3-2 to get a 2 game winning streak going.

Port Huron was 1 for 6 on the power play and Bloomington was 2 for 5
Larry Sterling got the win for the Icehawks (7-6) stopping 30 of 32 shots. Scott Fankhouser took the loss (6-7) stopping 26 of 29 shots

Jason Selleke is still battling a sore back and was scratched. Robert Snowball was also not dressed for the Icehawks.
