Icehawks keep defensive beat Flint 4-1

Icehawks head coach Stan Drulia said before the game that he believes defense is what wins championships and the Icehawks are defiantly playing stellar defense right now. After shutting out the Fort Wayne Komets in Fort Wayne the night before, The Hawks were able to hold the offensive minded Generals to just 1 goal on the night as they defeated Flint 4-1.

The Icehawks were able to jump out to the lead right away in the first 2 periods when they got some contributions from the rookies. First, Derek Patrosso scored in the first to give the Icehawks an early 1-0 lead. That was Patrosso's 2nd goal in as many nights. Then in the 2nd period, Joel Gasper scored his first professional goal to give his team the 2-0 lead. This was also Gasper's first ever professional point. Patrosso got the assist on the Gasper goal as well.

In the 3rd period the regular Icehawks scorers got to work on the powerplay. First, Tab Lardner netted his 5th goal of the year to give the Icehawks the commanding 3-0 lead. Then Jamie Carroll continued his hot start to the season when he scored his 8th goal of the season to put the Generals away. Kyle Deck however, was able to finally get the Generals on the board when he scored 10:26 into the 3rd period to end Larry Sterling's shut out bid. It also ended the Icehawks 5 period shut out streak.

In that period the General's head coach Bobby Reynolds tried to get things going for the Generals on a Flint Powerplay with 5 minutes left in the 3rd he pulled his goalie, Chad Alban so he could get a 6 on 4 advantage. It did not work however and Chad Alban quickly got back to his net after the powerplay ended.

The Icehawks finish their weekend tonight when they travel to Kalamazoo to take on the red hot K-Wings. This will be both team's 3rd game in as many days. Game time is 4:00 PM.
