Port Huron blank the champs 1-0 If you were to tell someone before last night's Port Huron and Fort Wayne in Fort Wayne that the Icehawks would only need one goal and it would be scored by a player who has zero professional goals and that would be all they needed to win, they would say your crazy. Well, it just happened last night.
Port Huron was making there first visit to Fort Wayne sense the Turner Cup Finals Game 7 where the Komets beat the Hawks in triple overtime to capture the Turner Cup. In front of 7,289 Fort Wayne faithful the Icehawks not only beat the Komets but shut them out 1-0.
The only goal in the game came from an unlikely source. At 16:54 into the first period, rookie Derek Patrosso picked up his own rebound in front of Fort Wayne goalie Nick Boucher and put it past him to put the Icehawks up for the final 1-0.
Everyone assumed that would defiantly not be enough to beat the Komets but Port Huron's defense stepped up big clogging the Komet's passing lanes and creating turn overs. The defense was able to hold the Komets to only 28 shots throughout the game. It was a great day for the Hawks defense but the man of the hour was 21 year old rookie Kevin Desfosses. Desfosses stopped all 28 shots he seen including 15 in the 3rd period to savor the victory at the Coliseum where he had never played before. This was Desfosses 2nd shut out of the season. He also shut out Kalamazoo at McMorran Arena earlier in the year.
It should set up an awesome game the next time these two teams go to battle which will be at McMorran Arena on November 28th, which is also Pack The House Night to honor Morris Snider. You can buy a pepsi at any participating locations and get 2 free tickets.
The Icehawks return to action tonight when they travel to Flint to take on the Generals. Puck drops at 7:30.
