Port Huron Icehawks Weekly Roundup: Week 4

The Icehawks played 2 games in 2 nights this week but it was no problem as they won both games from the Kalamazoo K-Wings. First the Hawks visited the K-Wings in Kalamazoo with both teams tied in last place with 4 points. The Hawks, lead by a 2 goal effort from Tab Lardner, defeated the K-Wings in their building 4-1. Kevin Desfosses got the win in goal. Desfosses was starting due to an apparent arm injury to Larry Sterling. That was also the 7th win in a row for the Icehawks in Kalamazoo. The Icehawks and K-Wings would play again Saturday night at McMorran arena and the Icehawks once again had no issue with beating the K-Wings. This time however the Icehawks would take it a step further and shut out the Wings 5-0. It was the first shut out of the season and the first ever professional shut out for Goaltender Kevin Desfosses. Jeff Zehr lead the way scoring 2 goals in the game. The Icehawks are now tied in 5th place with the Bloomington Prairie Thunder with 8 points which is 4 points behind first place Fort Wayne and Muskegon.

ZEHR AND TAB FINALLY ON THE BOARD

Both Jeff Zehr and Tab Lardner finally put up goals in the 2 games this weekend. First, Friday Lardner scored 2 and Saturday Jeff Zehr also scored twice. Both were held out of the goal column for the first 8 games after posting 30+ goal seasons the year before.

POWER RESTORED

The Icehawks who were struggling bad on the powerplay finally were able to get some powerplay goals this weekend. They went a combined 3 for 11 with the man advantage. That was good enough to get Port Huron out of last place in Power Play percentage. They now move up to 5th with a 15% rate. They also moved up to 4th place in the penalty kill with a 79.55 clip

FIRST FOR DESFOSSES

After getting his first ever professional win on Friday night, Goaltender Kevin Desfosses also got his first ever professional shut out on Saturday. Desfosses only gave up 1 goal the whole weekend and his numbers on the season in 3 games played are 2-1 with a 1.33 GAA and a .950 save %

ROSTER MOVES

Rory Smith left the team this week after deciding to pursue his career in Lacrosse. Rory is currently signed with the New York Titans in the NLL. Smith was placed on a non-roster spot and the Icehawks re-signed Joel Gasper to take his place.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Kevin Desfosses is this weeks Community News Player of the Week. Desfosses was strong posting a 2-0 record and only giving up 1 goal in 2 games. He also got the shut out on Saturday.

AROUND THE LEAGUE

Fort Wayne: Fort Wayne felt unfamiliar territory this week when they went into a 2 game slide after losing Friday to the Muskegon Lumberjacks. The Komets got back to their winning ways though when they beat Bloomington on Saturday to stay in a tie for first place

Muskegon: A very successful 3-0 weekend for the Lumberjacks put Muskegon in a tie for first place with the Komets. First Muskegon scored 4 goals in the 3rd period on Thursday to take down the Generals. Muskegon then would get a huge win against Fort Wayne on Friday and then defeated the Generals again on Saturday.

Flint: Another up and down weekend for the Generals again kept them in 3rd place but after blowing a 3-1 lead in the 3rd period on Thursday before beating Bloomington on Saturday, the Gens would lose again to Muskegon on Saturday. Small crowds for the Thursday games are becoming an issue for Flint though as an estimated 600 people were in the seats last Thursday.

Bloomington: Bloomington did not have the weekend they were looking for. First losing to Flint on Friday night at home and then traveling to Fort Wayne where they lost to the Komets. That pushed the Thunder all the way down to 4th place.

Kalamazoo: Kalamazoo got roughed up this week by the Icehawks losing both games. Scoring only 1 goal in both games is an alarming number. The Wings were outscored 9-1 in the 2 games. They did however make a major roster move, waiving Jan Jas and signing Tyler Willis.

COMING UP:

The Icehawks get right back to work Tuesday at home against the Bloomington Prairie Thunder. Tickets are buy one get one free for the Tuesday game. The Icehawks will then hit the road during the weekend. First making a stop in Bloomington on Friday before traveling to Flint on Saturday to take on the Generals.
