Training Camp Day 2 Today was Day 2 of the Icehawks training camp. It began with more passing drills, then moved on to defensive drills and some goaltending passing drills. They also worked on tipping the puck in front of the net which they look very good at. After the drills they had an hour long scrimmage with about 4 or 5 goals scored. The white team (which has Kris Vernarsky and Tab Lardner) seemed to really outplay the black team but the black team seemed to get it together a little better near the end.
Offense: Lots of work on passing in front of the net was worked on today. The offense is starting to look good, its running a lot smoother. The guy who impressed me the most was newcomer Matt Larke, he controlled the puck very well and made some good passes. They worked on some tipped passes in front of the net which they looked very good at. These guys are really starting to get a good chemistry together on offense.
Defense: This will be the surprise of the season. The defense is really looking good in camp right now. Defense was something that hurt the Icehawks last year but this year it looks like they have some definite studs on defense. Ian Turner stuck out and looked pretty good. They do a good job with the poke check on 1 on 1 drills. Tripping seemed to be an issue though, as B.J Adams tripped up another player that caused an injury.
Goalies: Goaltenders got to work on passing today, they made a couple of decent passes. Larry Sterling has great stick handling. Mike Minard looked good as well. They only had 4 goalies today because Manon Rheaume did not participate in today's camp. The 2 rookies (Mike Stone and Andre Laperriere) looked a little better then day 1. Sterling stuck around after the practice and had some fun taking shots from in front of the net with some players. Add a comment
